JOB SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Principal, the Dean of Instruction is responsible for driving the academic outcomes of the school. He/she monitors the quality of instruction and fidelity to the LEEP Academy Two-Way Immersion dual language model. The Dean of Instruction moves teachers from “good to great” and ensures that teachers have the support they need to become master educators of a high performing dual language school. He/she creates a collaborative professional learning environment where teachers feel a sense of ownership and responsibility over the learning of their students. The DOI must be able to build trusting relationships with his/her teachers and be able to influence & inspire their team to meet the ambitious goals set by the school. The DOI is knowledgeable of best practices in dual language instruction and supports the Principal’s plan for execution of the dual language model. The Dean of Instruction is a member of the Instructional Leadership Team. 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE DEAN OF INSTRUCTION *JOB MAY INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO THE FOLLOWING:

Academic Planning: 

 • Create & maintain data tracking systems for grade levels via Illuminate

 platform, and custom-made trackers

 • Conduct deep analysis of data in order to lead effective analysis meetings based on daily student work samples 

• Coordinate and support the creation of master schedule each year 

• Build grade level/content area action plans and materials to address data; 

• Monitor grade-level progress against assessment cycle benchmarks set by the Principal

• Own curriculum and assessment work/review such as lesson planning process,

assessment revisions, collaborative scoring, curriculum implementation and oversight of effectiveness 

• Coordinate & facilitate assessment cycles including scheduling, quality assurance of 

assessment materials, and teacher/student preparation. 

• With the Principal, plan and execute professional development throughout the school

year based on school needs. 

• Support the lesson planning process by providing weekly feedback to teachers on their lessons 

• Identify problems in academic performance and recommend and implement solutions in a timely manner 

 

Teacher Development: 

• Observe, coach and mentor instructional staff to ensure that teaching is at all times intentional, engaging, and rigorous, and that teachers are creating a warm, structured, and responsive classroom culture 

• Provide bite-sized and actionable feedback to teachers 

• Monitor and assess teacher performance and report to the Principal via weekly one-on -one meetings 

Anchor observations and feedback in the "LEEP Way" framework of

instructional practices, and contribute to improving that framework based on

implementation experience 

• Conduct yearly formal teacher evaluations 

• Build professional relationships with teachers that support their development; 

• Build a positive staff culture that is focused on student success and our core virtues 

• Build smooth and efficient working relations that positively impact academics;

work closely and efficiently with the school director, the school leadership team,

and LEEP Academy staff to ensure student success 

 

Family/Student Engagement: 

• Reinforce positive student behavior and establish rapport with students. Helps to maintain a safe, positive and orderly learning environment for staff and students.

• In partnership with school counselors, address the social-emotional needs of students through the use of research-based strategies 

• Address questions regarding academic programming that families may have

• Support teachers with parent/teacher conferences 

 

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS, ABILITY, AND QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

• Teacher certification - certification in bilingual education or related field preferred 

• Master’s degree in education preferred 

• Minimum of 5 years classroom teaching experience with track record of demonstrated student achievement required 

• School administrative or charter school leadership experience preferred • Experience in a dual language setting preferred 

• Must be completely fluent in both English & Spanish (speaking, reading, writing & listening) 

• Thorough knowledge of principles and best practices of two-way, immersion dual language education and the ability to apply nationally normed principles to the needs of LEEP Academy. 

• Thorough knowledge of the NY State Next Generation Learning Standards • Familiarity with the NYS Bilingual Progressions or similar framework (WIDA, ACTFL) 

• Public charter school administration, practices and organization. 

• Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate teaching support services, student services,

student activities, and school/parent academic programs. 

• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff,

other administrators, and the community. 

• Ability to multi-task and effectively communicate, both orally and in writing in Spanish

and English languages.

• The language of our school is Spanish. Maintaining the language in all aspects of the work is valued. 

• Work is generally confined to the school or campus, requiring those activities common to the environment. 

• Work requires sufficient mobility to patrol halls and school grounds, and to climb stairs in some buildings. 

• Lifting light objects may be necessary. 

• Operational duties such as arrival/dismissal duties & lunch/recess coverage duties will be required. 

• Some weekends and evenings are required.
